Child Learns...

"Thus a child learns; by wiggling skills through his fingers and toes into himself; by soaking up habits of those around him; by pushing and pulling his own world."
Frederick J Moffit

Sense of Balance

As you rock from center to one side then the other or forward and backward, there is an experience of alternating between being on-balance and off-balance. This gentle motion stimulates the vestibular system, helping children develop an improved sense of balance.

Reading to Baby

Reading to Baby in a pleasant environment helps her learn that reading is pleasurable. It also helps her begin to decode language. Infants younger than six months can distingish a wide range of speech contrasts. By eight months many can distinguish familiar words from unfamiliar words.

Inhibitory Control

One aspect of self-control is inhibitory control, or the ability to stop oneself and to wait. Toddlers love stop and go games because they allow the child to practice control over his/her physical body and to revel in his/her master of this control. Inhibitor control is important in social interactions where taking turns is involved, and as such is an important skill for success in school.

Books

"Some of the sweetest hours of life, on retrospect, will be found to have been spent with books." Ralph Waldo Emerson

This does seem to be true in my life, I remember reading to my son when he was a baby, we would sit and read a couple of times of day. We would read about Clifford, Carl the dog, Maisy, and Big Bird, then later reading Dr. Suess, and now we are reading Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, and other comic books.

As a child I loved all the adventures and glimpses of other people's lives reading books, (which I still enjoy). I'm so happy my son feels this way too. Last week we went to Powell's book store, Kurt bought a book and then we hung out at the coffee shop, reading, having a treat. Very Sweet!!

Early Learning Environments

"According to a New York Longitudinal Study, three major factors in early learning environments lead to competency in adulthood:
1. rich sensory environments
2. freedom to explore with few restrictions
3. available parents that acted as consultants."

Pretend Play

Imitation is the first stage of pretend play. As imitation evolves it becomes more imaginative. The complexity of pretend play can be seen when the child re-examines life experienes by adding or changing the happening.

Benefits of pretend play include:
a.. vocabulary development
b.. social skills development
c.. differentiation between reality and fantasy
d.. emotional support

Scaffolding

Scaffolding is an interactive learning process between adult and child. The adult observes the child's play ideas, then gently guides and supports the child's learning by building on what the child already is able to do. Ideally, the adult will begin by meeting the child where she is - by copying her play idea, for example. Then the adult makes a slight variation on the activity, providing appropriate challenges to lead the child to new levels of learning.

The Movement-Vision-Reading Connection

"Our visual sense functions...when our eyes are actively moving..., when the body and head move, the vestibular sytem is activated, and the eye muscles strenghten as they move in response. The more the eyes move, the more the muscles of both eyes work together." Later on, this "eye-teaming" will enable these now-toddlers to focus as well as to track and to conentrate as they learn to read in school. Smart Moves, by Carla Hannaford

Sound Maps

It is important to include a wide range of timbres in Baby's environment. This includes hearing the sounds of many languages. Each kind of sound maps new connections in Baby's brain. Repeated listening solidifies these connections.

Monday, January 18, 2010

Timbre

In Kindermusik class we explore a variety of musical instruments with different timbres (pronounced tambers) or characteristic sound qualities, such as the scratching of egg shakers, the ringing of bells and the resonant boom of the drum. As Baby or Toddler hears this variety of sounds, she is developing the listening vocabulary necessary for sound discrimination preceding language. And if she play the instruments, she learns that she can create a nice-sounding result.

Learning to be a Parent

"Learning to be a parent is not a matter of adopting a certain set of attitudes, but of expressing one's personality in the task of responding flexibly to the child's needs." Sheila Kitzinger

Security

Babies who have warm, responsive care are more resilient later in life. By following your instincts to cuddle Baby, you are providing the security and safety necessary for Baby's healthy development.

Stop and Go

Music is sound and movement, and it is silence and stillness. Just as we experience sculpture in terms of where it begins and ends in space, we experience music in terms of where it begins and ends in time that surrounds it.

The 12-Bar Blues

Early on, children detect not only the phonemes used in their native tongue but also the syntax of their language. Music also has syntax, and part of the development of musical literacy is recognition of musical syntax and form. This activity provides exposure to the American (originally African-American) form called the 12-bar blues. The most well-known blues form, the 12-bar blues is based on a set progression of chords across 12 measures of music: I-I-I-I-IV-IV-I-I-V-IV-I-I.

Movement and Learning

Children ages 1 1/2 to 3 learn primarily through movement. In order to learn they must manipulate objects and participate in body movement.

Tempo

Tempo or speed is central to transportation as well as to music. The 1 1/2 through 3-year-old child is learning to control and coordinate his body's movements and is naturally interested in the concepts of fast and slow, getting faster and getting slower, and stopping and starting. Mastering these concepts is immensely satisfying for the child.

Literacy

Reading picture books together with adults helps children internalize some skills that are crucial in the development of true literacy.
Reading Together:
  • fosters reading enjoyment
  • provides predictability through repetition
  • expands understanidng of story structures
  • promotes critical thinking
  • encourages language play and creative expression

Kindermusik Music and Story Time provides all these important benefits as well as helping devleop music literacy through the rhythm and movement element of the Kindermusik story books.

Active Listening

"Active listening is a process that goes beyond the physical act of hearing. It is an intellectual and emotional process that integrates a full range of inputs in a search for the meaning of and an understanding of a sender's message. It involves listening between the lines to hear what is not said as wll as what is said."
